Prospective Photovoltaic-Thermoelectric Hybrid System

Abstract

Photovoltaic-thermoelectric (PV-TE) hybrid system is an appealing concept due to its potential to harvest waste heat in solar cell or mitigate temperature effect through cooling. Three strategies have been reported to investigate the potential of the hybrid systems for efficiency improvement, which include cooling of solar cells by thermoelectrics, tandem hybrid PV-TE system, and spectral splitting. This perspective provides a critical account on the merit of these research strategies, highlighting the fundamental limits, technological challenges, and opportunities associated with developing PV-TE hybrid systems.
